Cultural, and food and wine itinerary (5 days)
Meeting point at the airports of Trapani and Palermo. Hotel accommodation with private transfer. Dinner at a restaurant in the city of Trapani for a first- hand experience with the flavors of typical products from the Sicilian cuisine, accompanied by wines selected by the Associazione Strade del Vino Erice DOC (Erice DOC Wine Routes Association). Return to the hotel.
9:30 am: Breakfast at the hotel.
10:00 am: Visit to the Pepoli Museum, housed in a former convent of the Carmelites, extensively restructured between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries. It is adjacent to the important Shrine of the Holy Annunciation (Santuario della SS.ma Annunziata), where the marble statue of the Madonna of Trapani is preserved and venerated, a work attributed to Nino Pisano (mid-fourteenth century). It also houses an important collection of decorative arts and sculptures, including works by Gagini, works in coral and gold, a nativity sculpture, as well as works in silver, various relics of Garibaldi, and a guillotine from the Napoleonic era.
12.30 pm: Visit to the medieval village of Erice Vetta. Depending on the weather conditions (mainly wind), we will decide whether to use the impressive cable car or else a private bus.
During the tour, the group will be accompanied by a highly qualified tour guide.
Following is a visit to the typically medieval village of Erice, through its cobbled streets, where you can admire its characteristic workshops during the tour.
There will be a stop at to the beautiful Mother Church, the Castello di Venere, and the Balio Gardens, where you can stop to admire the stunning panorama. A visit follows to numerous churches and the Ettore Maiorana Center, designed by the famous scientist, Antonio Zichichi.
Lunch will be in a typical restaurant in the village.
A must is a visit to the shop of Mrs. Grammatico to sample the hot “Genovesi Ericine”, a typical dessert that you will always remember from this holiday in Sicily.
6:00 pm: Return to the hotel.
Dinner on your own (we will provide you with a list of local restaurants we recommend, since we are personally familiar with their quality and professionalism, and each have a balanced quality-price ratio. We will also give you useful information for travel and things you might enjoy doing).
9:00 am: Breakfast at the hotel.
9:30 am: Transfer to the Stagnone Lagoon Reserve, an extraordinary lagoon from which the oldest salt marshes in the Mediterranean were obtained and from which one of the best salts in Italy, rich in nutrients, originates. You can visit a restored mill and learn about the entire process the salt undergoes, from the salt marshes all the way to our tables (you can also buy salt or souvenirs).
11:00 am: We board a boat to reach the extraordinary Phoenician site of Mothia, a small island within the lagoon (10 minute trip). You will be able to admire the Cothon (original Mooring Basin), the submersed Punic road, the necropolis, mosaics, and the beautiful statue of the Giovinetto, artistic testimony from the fifth century B.C.
1:00 pm: Lunch at a panoramic restaurant within the lagoon.
3:30 pm: We continue on to Marsala, then transfer to the Cantine Florio (winery) where they still preserve casks dating back to the 1800s, when the English noble families of Woodhouse and Ingham began to export Marsala wine throughout the world. A visit to the Cantine Florio means taking a “sensational journey” back in time and learning about both the history of the company, as well as its precious historical reserves. A tasting follows, and you will then have the opportunity to purchase the products of the winery.
5:00 pm: Visit to the historical center of the city, its main attraction being the Cathedral, dedicated to St. Thomas of Canterbury and founded during the Norman period.
7:00 pm: Return to the hotel.
9:30 pm: Dinner in a typical restaurant in the historic center of Trapani to taste its extraordinary fish couscous, and delight your palate with another wine from the local tradition.
We finish off with a stroll in the beautiful Baroque historical center of Trapani.
Return to the hotel .
9:30 am: Breakfast at the hotel.
10:30 am: Visit to the Castiglione plant to watch the various tuna processing stages. You will then enjoy a tasting of typical products (tuna bottarga, tuna roe, tuna bresaola, etc.).
11:30 am: Transfer to the city of Custonaci, with a stop at the Barbera oil mill to visit the establishment and take the opportunity to sample an intensely flavored oil produced from olives that are cultivated in this stretch of land, in the province of Trapani, which is constantly kissed by the sun.
1:00 pm: Transfer to the seaside town of San Vito Lo Capo, famous for having one of the most beautiful beaches in Italy. 1:30 pm: Lunch in San Vito Lo Capo.
6:00 pm: Expected return to the hotel, some time to rest, then dinner.
